To fully benefit from a composting unit, I would recommend the following actions;
- We first need to choose a design (see other document) and decide the location of the composter.
- The creation of easy to understand signage, which can be placed near the composter, this would then be used both by staff, and for educational purposes.
- Development of a simple training manual for internal use A training manual would need to provide information on the importance of composting, the procedures (including data collecting procedures), the do’s and don’ts, a list of green and brown waste etc. This should be visual and be used to train staff and as a reference for staff.
- The implementation of colour coded bins, so waste and recyclables can be easily separated.
- We need to decide how to dispose of organic waste such as meats and dairy products. Could use a bokashi bin or something similar. This waste could also just be thrown out initially.
- Compost will be useful for use on properties and V2V reforestation/nursery projects. Should also consider donating to farmers, to build community relations. Once composter is established, we could consider composting waste for other businesses for a small fee. This could help generate some income and provide jobs to the community. From a brief search online, this is very popular in USA but I can only see this type of business in Nairobi and not along the coast.
