Project Orphans – Medical Care

WE PARTNER WITH LOCAL VILLAGES TO TACKLE THE VILLAINS THAT DESTROY HUMANITY

In rural Uganda, there is 1 doctor for every 22,000 Ugandans. Furthermore, it is estimated that 70% of doctors work in urban areas, where only 20% of Uganda’s population resides. This means access to quality healthcare in rural Uganda is almost nonexistent. In an effort to support these struggling communities, two individuals, Christina and Brittany went on a mission to transform the world of orphan care by equipping communities to care for these vulnerable children. Through their connections with local Ugandan change makers, Christina and Brittany focused their efforts on ending the cycle of abuse, poverty and injustices in Uganda, and in 2011, Project Orphans was formed. For nearly a decade Project Orphans has implemented innovative programs that combat these systemic issues, providing tools that allow people to pursue a ‘quality and purposeful’ life.

To support the amazing work of Project Orphans, Valor to Virtue has financially supported the building of a medical clinic in rural Uganda, serving its community as a ‘mini- hospital’. Impressively, the clinics has multiple in-patient exam rooms, delivery rooms, a pharmacy, a surgical theatre, medical ward, and laboratory. Furthermore, the clinic is equipped with medical software that helps track patients’ health, medical history, prescriptions, and other medical information, ensuring continuity of care. In 2020 alone, Project Orphans has refilled over 8,400 prescriptions for their patients. Each month Project Orphan’s Medical Center sees 500+ patients. The centre has also recently been expanded, opening a miracle birthing centre that has improved both maternal and infant health. The new centre is equipped with delivery beds, incubators, oxygenators ultrasound machines and much more. Project Orphans believes that all women should have access to a midwife, that they are respected and empowered throughout the birth process, and this new centre helps do exactly that!

In addition to providing their community with accessible and high quality healthcare, Project Orphans also deliver education programs for their local community on health issues such as malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis. Project Orphans work with victims of the Ugandan civil war to help them overcome the trauma of their past by providing counselling and spiritual guidance. They also offer marital, family and individual counselling to their community.

Project Orphans go even further by offering unconditional care to children with special needs, this includes tuition-free care and therapeutic services. All children under Project Orphans care receive 3 meals a day and the love they so need, allowing them to develop and grow into healthy functioning adults. Project Orphans also stand by vulnerable women, offering life skills training at a nearby women’s shelter. This allows these women to earn a salary and gain their much deserved independence. Finally, Project Orphans provide emergency relief, responding fast to any crisis, whether this is medical care, emergency shelter or legal advocacy.
